Levi, a second grader, had always struggled in school. Known for his fun-loving, yet sometimes disruptive attitude, Levi was always the life of the party. Teachers loved spending time one-on-one with Levi. He would share insights about the world, ask thoughtful questions, and stay focused on what he was expected to do. But when Levi got into a crowd of peers, he would lose focus, run around, and even get physical with others. “He’s exhausting,” his teacher, Ms. Howard described.
Students like Levi exist in every classroom in every school. Educators recognize their strengths but in some cases their communication is overwhelmingly negative throughout the day. It feels like constant nagging to straighten up and act right. What is even more challenging is that their families are baffled by their continuous struggles in school. Sentiments like, “He doesn’t do that at home” or “it must be something related to classroom management” are common.
Praise is essential for Levi to stay engaged in and see the purpose of school. Unfortunately, his disruptive behavior has led to him not seeing his own strengths and assets.

Researcher Dr. Terri Apter warns about the dangers of praise. She states, “Some psychologists warn that praise for overall ability is harmful because it suggests that any good performance is a result of natural ability, with the implication that a poor performance is a result of natural deficiency” (Apter, 2009). Therefore, praise must:

Be specific: Describe the specific behavior that you saw from the student. It should be observable.

Connected to character behavior traits: Connect the observable behavior to something that could be transferable (i.e. integrity, courage, empathetic, etc.)

Throughout the next few weeks, I made it a point to praise Levi. “Levi, I noticed the way that you came in and went straight to your seat to get started on your morning work. You are showing a lot of responsibility this morning,” I said one day. The next day, he did the same. Although he did not do this every day for the rest of the week, you could see his increased effort to meet the behavioral standards for the morning routine. Praise is powerful in shaping behavior and mindsets when done correctly.

As a tenaciously, bold woman in education, I have had my fair share of run-ins with people in power. To my surprise, the most flack I’ve ever gotten as a passionate educator, as a believer in innovation, was primarily from other women. I think their disapproval stems from being a woman and having power withheld all of their lives. Some women feel like there is not enough power to go around. They’ve scraped and clawed their way through life, but still feel stifled by our male dominated culture. Hear me now, it is changing. As a teacher of kids between the ages of 11-15, the youth will most definitely save us. Women, let us be uplifters. Let us allow others to shine. There is enough power and love to go around. Hold space for other strong women because there is enough space for all of us. To those women in leadership positions, don’t silence other women. Don’t be threatened by the audaciously bold, passionate educators who work for you. Harness and use their power to elevate the culture in your schools and districts.

My message to all leaders in education, female, male, and otherwise:

Fight feelings of defeat about the systemically broken public education system. Do not take out your frustrations and need for power on your staff or worse… kids. That will only drive teachers out of this profession. Instead, relentlessly promote the positive on your campus, and help fix this system from the inside. Let us surround ourselves with people on fire for education, and let us relentlessly do what is best for kids. I’m a huge fan of the winningest team of all time, the US Women’s National Soccer Team. I think of these badass women on the same mission. Working together. Practicing their craft until mastery is gained. I’m sure there have been some disagreements amongst the players, coaches, and trainers, but when push comes to shove, these ladies have the same goal. No pun intended. This hard work and passion for success is the mentality I want to foster in schools. We might disagree, and we might argue, but when it comes down to it, we are on a mission to always do what is best for our student population. Full Stop. Uplift. Empower. Amplify. Appreciate.

So, women in education and everywhere, this I promise you… I will celebrate your wins. I will lift you up in your valleys; I will roll my window down at Walmart to tell you I love your outfit, earrings, sass, shoes, spunk; you name it, I will celebrate it.

As an emerging thought leader and speaker in education spheres, I promise to help the next up and coming teacher/speaker/consultant because, “Turn around and help her too because it wasn’t long ago that she was YOU!”

When I win, you win. When you win, I win. I promise to relentlessly hold space for strong, audaciously bold women, and I will strive to do so with kindness, and a helping hand.

Teach On, beautiful warriors!
Katie

I’ve been pondering this thematic idea of the ‘unseen.’ Have you ever been to Disney World? Disney lives and dies by creating an experience that will last a lifetime. When you work for Disney, you are always ‘on a stage.’ Backstage is the area of the parks that no guests see. I only know this because my brother, Bill, worked for Disney for a summer.

As teachers, there are a lot of moving parts in our days. There is a lot unseen by students, parents, and admin during a school year. We must hide a part of ourselves and always be ‘on.’ Heaven forbid we become the emotional, complex beings that we are, and that our kids are. What else is ‘unseen’ in education? The extensive amounts of grading, lesson planning, professional development attending, and researching the most cutting edge innovation in education. But, what is often hiding under the surface of every teacher I know is the fact that doing this job is far more physically, emotionally, and financially draining than anyone can guess at unless you are, in fact, a teacher.

It is a fact in this calling of ours that we will leave the building with a heavy heart sometimes; that is just the nature of it. This is messy, human work, and it will never look like the perfect, color-coded spreadsheet of an accountant. Do you know what else can be unseen: kids. Think of your students; you spend most of your time engaging, and trying to reengage those ‘big’ personalities, but have you taken the time to see the unseen. The quiet one, the one who might be humiliated if you call on her? The one who you may forget in five years when you’ve had over 500 students since she sat in your class.

One of my most magical years as a teacher was when I got to loop with a special group of 7th graders into their 8th grade year. I didn’t have to spend nine weeks training them or going over procedures, learning their names, or learning where each child was on the academic scale. I knew them, so we got right to it. My students made huge gains that year in writing, in grammar, in life lessons. Last weekend, they graduated from high school c/o 2022! They invited their old 8th grade English teacher, and I was there! I knew they would be held in the gym or some other large area of the school before the pomp and circumstance began, so I came early, and made my way in there first. As kid/young adult after young adult ran at me and burst into tears, I remembered my why. Sometimes your why seems unseen many times. One boy, who was quiet, who was studious, who I had for two years in a row, could not stop sobbing. I promised him I hadn’t died; I was right here, and if he needed me, I would help!

They were the blessings to me, and as I drove away from graduation that night a little misty eyed, I remembered the life lessons they taught me. Teachers, although you are on stage, and rarely let anyone backstage, and most times you feel unseen, frustrated, or sad, remember your huge impact on kids who you may never even realize until years later that you made a difference in their lives.

Still, let’s listen to teachers. Pass legislation that will help retain our teachers who are feeling unseen. Give them wrap around services in their buildings. We need trauma informed specialists, more counselors, psychiatrists, smaller class sizes, and better working conditions. Our kids deserve it. Our teachers deserve it.

Teach On, Warriors. I’m rooting for you!

Katie

Email communication can be an effective tool for communicating with a number of families across your classroom or school. When sending sweeping messages to the class, such as field trips, class parties, or the announcement of an upcoming spelling test, email can be a really effective tool.
However, when it comes to one-on-one communication with families, I give a huge word of caution. Here’s why:
Anything written electronically is a document trail and you never know how people may choose to use that information later on.
Tone is hard to read. Others may interpret your supportive tone as sarcasm or worse.
Emotions fester. You need to be able to sleep at night and be well.
Even when the conversation seems benign, it is always just as effective to pick up the phone to have a conversation with a family. Mutual understanding is always easier in real time.

When in doubt, choose the phone.

That being said, email communication can also help you as the teacher keep documentation of appropriate communication. For example, you may go back into your email to prove your correspondence when it comes to IEP meetings, discipline infractions, and other. As with any tool, its effectiveness is found in how and when it’s used. Take a moment and consider if sending an email is the best choice for you, your student, and the present situation.

For more information about effective classroom management strategies for new teachers, please visit our Classroom Management Workshop page.
Years ago, I coached in a first-grade classroom with Ms. Janie Harvey. As with many first-year teachers, she struggled with classroom management. Transitions were challenging. Centers were a nightmare. She blamed much of the challenges on a single student, Deon. It was true. Deon had his struggles. He would hit other kids. He would yell and even run out of the classroom. Soon, Ms. Harvey decided that Deon needed to attend an alternative school for elementary-aged kids. The graduation rate was 0%. You read that right. 0% So, this first-year teacher made a life decision for a six-year-old.

Dr. Stuart Ablon, in his TED talk, discusses children with chronic behavioral challenges. His thesis is “kids do well if they can.” In essence, he asserts that students with behavioral challenges basically have a learning disability. But instead of things like reading and math, students with behavioral challenges have challenges with frustration tolerance and problem-solving.

Within a week, he played nicely at centers, managed transitions effectively, and used his hand signals when he was on the brink.

Fast forward… I was touring a school and walked into a fifth-grade classroom. I immediately recognized a much bigger Deon. I quietly walked over to his teacher and asked how he does in class. “He’s a model student. If I could have more Deons, I would,” the teacher replied. Classroom management means that we are just “managing” the behavior that comes into the classroom. “Discipline is about developing and creating appropriate behaviors, not just managing the ones that are already there,” Morrish says. So, if we want cooperative, respectful, insightful students, we need to be proactive in approaching discipline, not management.

What about school discipline? “But Mr. Fox lets me have my cell phone out!” We all know those teachers that let school policies slip.
Last week was busy; let’s be perfectly honest, every week is busy, but for this post, last week was extra, extra busy. I’m an Instructional Coach. People ask me, “What does that mean?” Well, it means a lot of different things to me. I teach the teachers, but more importantly, I serve the teachers because, as my good friend, and principal, Charles Williams, says, “If serving is beneath you, leading is beyond you!” If you are a principal, you should get his book; Inside The Principal’s Office, it is a good one.

I’m of the notion that I can’t teach teachers if I’m not connected to kids. In my role, I teach two writing classes that I have affectionately named “Ms. Kinder Mania.” I like to invite a struggling teacher into my space to learn and grow, and then I can go into their space to help model a lesson. In my opinion, everything in a school is instructional. That means I could be doing any number of things on any given day.

Last week I moved broken desks out of a teacher’s room because she asked me to help. I didn’t have enough deodorant on for the heavy lifting, but that is another blog post.

Last week, I ran to a teacher’s room because she texted me ‘911.’ I assumed that meant an emergency, so I sprinted as fast as my short 40-year-old legs could carry me. I found her students sitting in extreme quiet when I walked in, but no teacher. I looked around and saw that she was under her desk, sobbing. She was having an all-out panic attack. I sent her to my room and taught the rest of her class.

Last week, there was a violent fight before school even started, and everyone saw the fight either in person or via a shared video, so I had to drop into a community circle for my kids. They were scared. We journaled, shared, and talked about our emotions. We named our fear and learned some coping mechanisms.

Last week, a teacher called me because she had food poisoning and had to drop everything to go home.

Last week, one of my baby teachers emailed me, “SOS.” I ran to her class, and she was shaken up over a student who had just had a violent episode in her class. Her 6th graders were crying; she needed me to model my community circle, so I did.

Last week, I had to develop lessons for two different classes for the week ahead because their teacher either quit or was sick.

Last week, someone bit my head off when I asked him a question, and I burst into tears. He said, “I thought you were one of those strong women?!” I laughed, “I am! And I also happen to be human.” He backed away as quickly as he could as I said, “I cry for the same reason I laugh…I’m paying attention!” To quote the one and only Glennon Doyle. My coworker ran away.

Last week, I took my son to soccer practice three times 45 minutes away. I ubered my daughter to acting and a school interview. I had to make dinner (Five Times)! Well, four. We ordered pizza one night. Thank God for Mazzios.

Last week, I graded, planned, and implemented my lessons and pivoted when the day needed me to change.

And that was just last week…

To my teacher warriors, we see you. You are valued, cherished, and respected in this most noble profession, even if it doesn’t feel that way sometimes. No matter how your last week was, teach on, warriors.

Katie
